Get ready for a rough start
This was, without a doubt, my LEAST favorite semester. It doesn't help that I felt like the teachers were trying to weed out the class. They will deny this, but it is hard to argue with the numbers. If that is not the case, then there is a problem with the teaching method (IMHO). Plus, you will run into instructors that will actually tell you "I don't care what you have to say about me, I have tenure". Don't worry, it does get better...
This is the semester that you will spend too much time on how to make a bed and you will learn the irony of the words "Calculate with Confidence".
Math tests single handedly cut our class in half, if not more. It doesn't help that some of the answers for practice questions in the back of the book were wrong! So know your math! You can use your own methods to solve your problems as long as you show your work, but I suggest using Dimensional Analysis. The name is more intimidating than the process. To get an idea of how it works, look at pages 233-235 of "Calculating with Confidence" (4th edition).
You will also be tested on things that you might not have perceived as a focus point for nursing. These include what demographics are more prevalent to what types of diseases and what you might anticipate the doctor to do next.
This is only the first semester. Study hard, don't complain, and for the love of all things holy, do NOT make any noise during lecture! If you can make it past this semester, then you can make it through nursing school!
